Have you ever suddenly remembered a name you were trying to recall for an hour? Or felt a quiet clarity arrive just when you needed it? The Bhagavad Gita, in Chapter 15, verse 15, says there is something deeper behind such moments. Krishna says he is seated in the heart of every being.

Here is the verse, its meaning, and what it can mean in daily life.

The verse (Bhagavad Gita 15.15)

sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo
mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṁ ca |
vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham || 15.15 ||

I am seated in the hearts of all. From me come memory, knowledge and also their loss. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas. I am the author of the Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.

Word-by-word meaning

  • sarvasya: of all beings
  • ca: and
  • aham: I
  • hṛdi: in the heart
  • sanniviṣṭaḥ: seated, dwelling well
  • mattaḥ: from me
  • smṛtiḥ: memory
  • jñānam: knowledge
  • apohanam: loss, removal (forgetting)
  • vedaiḥ: by the Vedas
  • sarvaiḥ: by all
  • vedyaḥ: to be known
  • vedānta-kṛt: the maker of Vedanta
  • veda-vit: the knower of the Vedas

Where does this verse come from?

Chapter 15 is called the chapter on the "Supreme Person". It begins with the picture of the upside-down ashvattha tree, a symbol of this world with its many branches. Before this verse, Krishna speaks of the sun, the moon and fire, whose light comes from him. Then he turns from the outer world to the inner one: the same presence is also within us, in the heart.

What the verse really says

  • The divine is not far away. Krishna says he is seated in the heart of everyone, not only in temples or in the sky.
  • Memory and knowledge come from him. In this view, the ability to remember and to understand is a gift, not only our own achievement.
  • Even forgetting is mentioned. Apohanam means removal or loss. Forgetting, too, has a place in the order of things. Sometimes forgetting a hurt is a mercy.
  • All the Vedas point to him. The study of scripture is meant to lead to this one truth.

Common misunderstandings

  1. "So I do not need to study or practise." The verse does not say this. It says that knowledge is a gift, and the right response to a gift is to use it with effort and thanks.
  2. "Then everything I do is automatically right." Being seated in the heart does not mean every impulse is divine. The Gita elsewhere asks us to use discernment and to steady the mind.
  3. "It is only a poetic idea." For devotees, it is a direct statement of faith. You are free to read it as devotion or as reflection, but the verse itself speaks plainly.

How to apply it in daily life

  • Before study or work: take a quiet moment, and ask for clarity. Then sit down and do the effort fully.
  • When you remember something late: be grateful for it instead of blaming yourself for forgetting.
  • When you cannot let go of an old hurt: remember that forgetting is also part of healing.
  • When you feel alone: this verse gives a thought to hold, that you are never completely without support within.
  • After a success: remember that your knowledge and memory were gifts, which keeps pride small.
